Overview

A man fatally shot by Customs officers at the Otay Mesa border crossing on Saturday was a Perris resident, authorities said Thursday.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 38-year-old Ernesto Gutierrez Cortez.

Cortez was suspected of carjacking a Chevrolet Impala on Perris Boulevard, in Perris, about 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Riverside County deputies started a pursuit moments later, sheriff’s Deputy Alberto Martinez said.

They handed off the chase to the California Highway Patrol, who pulled out shortly before reaching the border off state Route 905. At the border, authorities said, Cortez tried to get around other traffic at the border crossing, then aimed the car at a Customs and Border Protection officer.

That officer and two others opened fire on the car, killing Cortez about 10:30 a.m.
