Overview

The suspect who died in last week's shooting off of E Road in LaBelle, Florida, has been identified as 23-year-old Eddy Barrios of 5783 Spencer Road in LaBelle.

It had been reported to deputies that Barrios was the suspect of a battery that occurred earlier in the evening. Deputies then responded to the area of the suspect's homes. When they turned onto E Road, they witnessed Barrios walking on E Road armed with a sawed off shotgun. Deputies identified themselves and ordered Barrios to drop his weapon. Barrios refused the orders given by the deputies and instead he raised his shotgun on them. Deputies then fired at the suspect.

Barrios was transported to Lehigh Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

In a release, the sheriff's office said deputies encountered the man walking on the roadway carrying two guns, and they shot and killed him when he turned toward them.

The Sheriff's Office has not released the man's name, but said he lived on E Road.

"The cops they stop and tell him freeze, get on the ground," said Junior Perez, an eyewitness who said he saw the man holding a shotgun. "I don't know what caused them to shoot, but I just heard gunshots and took off running and didn't look back."

Bullet holes covered a utility pole just feet from where the man died near a ditch.

Neighbor Yuliana Lopez said her family was awoken by up to ten gunshots.

"They were just so close. It sounded like really close fireworks," Lopez said. "We just got scared. we didn't know what the heck was going on."

Lopez said the scene prevented her kids from getting to their bus stop Thursday morning.

"We knew something bad had happened when we started seeing the deputies pull out the yellow tape," she said.

The deputies involved were not injured and are on paid leave, which is standard in these situations.
