Overview

A 77-year-old man who was shot by a Birmingham police officer after he pointed a gun at first responders has died from his injuries more than a month after the shooting. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the man as Douglas Harris. A Birmingham police officer and a Birmingham firefighter conducted a welfare check at Harris' apartment in the 7900 block of 1st Avenue South on Feb. 20. When Harris opened the door, he pointed a gun at them, according to Birmingham police. The officer fired at Harris and hit him twice.
