Overview

The Gregg County Sheriff's Department said a jail inmate died early Monday morning.

According to B.H. Jameson, a Gregg County Justice of the Peace, Debra Duffie, 52, was transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center from the jail on Sunday at 5 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:12 on Monday morning.

Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said Duffie was being held in a separation cell and was being treated for a medical condition by jail medical staff. She had been sent to Good Shepherd Medical Center on August 15 for treatment of a medical condition and was returned to the jail the same day.

On August 18, jail medical staff alerted the jail doctor, who ordered Duffie be sent to Good Shepherd for additional treatment. Longview Fire and EMS responded and Duffie was transported to the hospital. While en route, she suffered a cardiac event and was admitted for treatment at the hospital.

Texas Ranger Todd Martin, along with Gregg County Sheriff's Investigators, are conducting the investigation.

Jameson said Duffie had a history of medical issues. She was serving time for violation of probation.

Duffie's body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Preliminary results should be available in 24-48 hours. A complete autopsy could take between six weeks and six months.
