Overview

A man police said was armed with a pair of scissors died Wednesday after officers used a Taser while attempting to take him into custody.

About 8:10 a.m., the man was in the 4700 block of N Western Avenue and made a threatening gesture toward officers, according to a police news release.

One of the officers deployed his Taser.

According to the release, the man fell to the ground and began to stab himself. 

Officers disarmed the man and placed handcuffs on him. 

The man continued to be combative toward the officers, who then placed him in maximal restraints, securing his legs, the news release reported.

Officers then noticed the man was in medical distress and having difficulty breathing.

Handcuffs were removed and an ambulance was called. The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
