Overview

Kedgerick Smith knew his stepson wasn't perfect.

In fact, Smith believes Daryll Blair had been intoxicated when an officer fatally shot the unarmed college student at a convenience store early July 16 near his Northwest Side apartment in the 8900 block of Datapoint Drive.

He was a typical, wild college student. I knew he smoked marijuana, Smith said. But I don't care what he had in system when you see a mentally (unstable) person in the street, do you shoot them to help them?

Blair, 19, was fatally shot after he allegedly crashed a stolen police-issued Ford Explorer, got out of the SUV and began charging toward Police Officer Sharonda Harris.

Before the shooting, police had arrived about 4:30 a.m. at Amerigo's Food Mart in the 4100 block of Gardendale Street, where a man, now identified as Blair, was said to be acting crazy and attacking someone's car.

Witnesses told police he was yelling at people, saying: I am the king! Give me your truck!
