Overview

According to police, an off-duty Baltimore police officer was awakened in his home Monday morning during an attempted burglary by 20 year-old Darius Miller, Jr, wrestled a gun from Miller and fatally shot him with it,.

The officer, who was not hurt, has been placed on administrative leave. The suspect was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither was immediately identified.

Capt. Jarron Jackson, a police spokesman, said the officer called 911 about 11:30 a.m. and alerted emergency personnel to the shooting in his home in the 4400 block of Furley Ave., in the Frankford neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore.

The officer was home alone at the time of the shooting, Jackson said. It was unclear how the suspect gained entrance, but that is under investigation, he said.

Once inside, police believe, the suspect confronted the officer and demanded money from him before the shooting, Jackson said. Police do not believe the suspect fired any shots.

A weapon has been recovered, Jackson said.
