Overview

Unarmed Dalvin Hollins was shot by a police officer on July 27, 2016 after robbing a pharmacy in Tempe and died of his wounds as he hid in a nearby senior-care center, police say.

Hollins for a time had barricaded at Westchester Senior Living, an assisted-living facility with about 160 residents, on Rural Road north of Guadalupe Road. After about an hour of trying to make contact with him, police said SWAT team members discovered Hollins had died.

Police are still waiting to interview that lieutenant. He was wearing a body camera but it was not on during the shooting, Pooley said.

"The body cameras should have been on," says Hollins' mother.

New York Daily News columnist Shaun King tweeted on August 8, 2016 that he had confirmed Hollins was shot in the back. Tempe police Lt. Edward Ouimette, who officials named as the shooter, had been in pursuit of a robbery suspect when he encountered Hollins, the KNXV-TV reported.

Ouimette, a 19-year veteran of the force only turned the camera on after he shot Hollins. The 52-year-old police lieutenant told officials that he believed Hollins was armed and had pointed what he thought was a gun, according to KNXV-TV.
