Overview

A Utah Highway Patrol officer fatally shot a man who authorities were worried might have been on his way to a crowded parade while being chased.

Investigators say there were indications that 32-year-old Cody Ray McCray might have wanted to die in a “suicide by cop” situation during the chase on Tuesday.

McCray crashed head-on into a Centerville police car and then was rammed by another police vehicle and knocked into the median, where it came to a stop and ignited a grass fire.

Authorities say the trooper then fired his gun, fatally shooting McCray.

McCray was being pursued for driving a stolen vehicle. He was leading police near an Independence Day parade.

Police would not say whether McCray was armed, but said he was known to law enforcement officials.
