A church usher, Brown was called “Mr. Congeniality” by his school teachers. Out of school, he was goofing off with friends, ringing doorbells and tossing rocks at random houses. One of those houses belonged to off-duty Baltimore County police officer James D. Laboard, 31. After his home was struck by a rock, Laboard chased the teenagers throughout the neighborhood before catching up to Brown. The ensuing altercation led to Brown dying from asphyxiation.
