Overview

Christopher Allen Taylor, a 19-year-old black man, was fatally shot by police Thursday, February 21, 2016 in the 6400 block of Keynote Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Long Beach police shot and killed Taylor, who was suspected of stealing a vehicle after he allegedly opened fire on officers early Thursday, officials said.

He was suspected in a burglary in Redondo Beach and pursued by Long Beach police shortly before 1 a.m. after he had eluded the California Highway Patrol. Taylor was suspected of burglarizing a home and stealing a white BMW, Long Beach Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton said.

The CHP lost the suspect as he exited the San Diego (405) Freeway at Studebaker Road. Long Beach police then located the suspect shortly after and chased him to the 6400 block of Keynote Street near Los Coyotes Diagonal.

There, Taylor lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the garage of a vacant home and hit an orange car parked in the driveway, Eaton said.

Taylor allegedly fired a handgun at officers before he was killed by return fire. Taylor died at the scene, Eaton said, adding that a handgun was recovered.
