Overview

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the fatal shooting of a black woman by white police officers who said the driver of the car in which she was riding had driven at them after refusing to stop at a license checkpoint.

It was the second time in six months that an unarmed black was killed by white officers in Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the officers fired 22 shots in self-defense, killing the woman, Carolyn Sue Boetticher.

Ms. Boetticher, 48, died on Wednesday after two officers, Donn Belz and Shannon Jordan, fired at the car she was in when it accelerated and swerved toward Officer Jordan, the police said. Neither Ms. Boetticher nor the driver, Robert Lundy Sr., 55, was armed.

Mr. Lundy was arrested and hospitalized for a cocaine overdose after running from the car.
