Overview

A man shot dead by a Baton Rouge police officer during a struggle at an apartment complex has been identified as 24-year-old Calvin Toney, Louisiana State Police Master Trooper Bryan Lee said.

Lee said that the officer was making a courtesy escort with a state Department of Children and Family Services caseworker when a struggle ensued between Toney and the officer at The Palms Apartments on McClelland Drive in Baton Rouge.

Officials have not identified the officer involved in the shooting. The officer is on paid administrative leave, as is standard in officer-involved shootings.

District Attorney Hillar Moore said at the scene that investigators have already reviewed the body camera footage from the officer. He said he wanted to dispel rumors that the man was handcuffed at the time of the shooting.

The struggle lasted "many minutes" and involved a stun gun, Moore said.
