Overview 
New Orleans police said video evidence, which they have not released, shows Calvin McKinnis firing a single shot in the direction of officer Frederick Carter. The 14-year veteran officer returned five rounds, two of which fatally struck McKinnis. Family members have not seen footage from Carter's body camera or from the dashboard camera in the officer's squad car. But they dispute that McKinnis fired first, saying they didn't think the U.S. Army veteran and father of three young children even owned a gun.
