Overview

31 year-old Bernard Wells was shot and killed after allegedly brandishing a gun at a Chino police officer late Saturday night, July 24, 2016 according to law enforcement officials.

Wells died at Chino Valley Medical Center after he was shot by the officer near the 12100 block of Central Avenue, according to a police release.

Just before 9:30 p.m., a woman flagged down an officer near Central Avenue and told him a suspicion person, later identified as Wells, pulled up in his car and asked her a question, police officials said. The woman reportedly told the officer the man had a gun and gave the officer the location where she last saw the man.

As the officer approached Wells’ car, the 31-year-old allegedly refused to cooperate and ran, according to the statement. The officer ran after Wells and called in for assistance.

Wells ran to an adjacent shopping center and encountered another responding officer, police said. That’s when police say Wells pointed his gun at the responding officer, and the officer shot Wells.

A gun was recovered at the scene, Chino police spokesperson Monica Gutierrez said
