Overview

34 year-old mother Autumn Mae Steele was killed by police responding to domestic dispute call. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting in eastern Iowa.

It happened in Burlington around 10:25 a.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of South Garfield Avenue.

One officer iwas treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The officer, Jesse Hill, shot Steele, 34, in January when responding to a disturbance in which she was screaming and hitting her husband, Gabriel Steele, outside their home. Autumn Steele had spent the prior night in jail after being arrested for allegedly assaulting her husband.

Her 3-year-old son was at her side when she was shot.

A 12-second clip of the video from Hill’s body camera released by authorities and embedded below shows he fired his gun twice without warning after a growling dog is heard. While it’s not apparent on the video clip that has been released, the German Shepherd jumped on Hill’s back and bit his thigh, causing injuries that required treatment, authorities said.

Legal Action

The shooting was justified because of the dog attack, a prosecutor later determined before Hill returned to work.

September 2016 A judge has dismissed open records complaints against the Burlington Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation but will let a case against the Des Moines county attorney continue.
