Overview

36 year-old Antronie Scott was killed by a San Antonio police officer John Lee who mistook the cell phone he was holding for a gun and shot him Thursday night, February 4, 2016. The shooting occurred at the Wood Hollow Apartments near Isom and East Ramsey roads.

Police Chief William McManus said there were several undercover officers watching Scott who was wanted on warrants for narcotics and possession of a firearm.  John Lee, who fatally shot an unarmed man on the North Side last week, was not the only uniformed San Antonio Police Department officer at the scene, according to new details revealed in an incident report obtained by MySA.com Wednesday.

Authorities had not previously mentioned the presence of a second officer, identified in the report as Officer Brian Bilica. According to police, Bilica did not fire his weapon and is still on patrol.

An undercover officer called for a uniformed officer to come make contact with the man at the Wood Hollow Apartments parking lot.

McManus explained what happened in the moments before the shooting. He said the officer told him to put his hands up, the man spun around, and the officer shot once. Chief McManus said they weren’t able to capture video of the incident but they did capture audio.  Video from the officer’s dash cam did not record the shooting because of the way the officer’s car was positioned, and officers in the precinct have not yet been given body cameras.

In the recording, "the officer says 'Show me your hands' very quickly. And then almost before he even finished saying it, one shot is fired. And it struck the individual in the upper torso," McManus said.

On March 1, 2016, Chief McManus announced that Officer John Lee had been issued a contemplated indefinite suspension for placing himself unnecessarily in a tactical situation wherein he felt compelled to use deadly force.

Legal Action

The wife of an unarmed man recently shot and killed by an SAPD officer has filed a suit against the force and city.

On March 15, it was reported that the San Antonio police chief had changed his mind about firing the officer who killed Antronie Scott, saying the officer would instead get additional training.
