Overview

A Summit County Jail inmate died Saturday night after an altercation between him and two sheriff’s deputies left the three hospitalized Friday.

Anthony Jones, 36, and the two deputies got into an altercation around 9:40 a.m. Friday in a secure area of the jail, at 205 E. Crosier St.

All three were transported to local hospitals. The deputies sustained minor injuries, said Bill Holland, a spokesman for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Holland declined on Friday to give further details of the incident, including the names of deputies, how the altercation began or whether weapons were involved.

Jones died around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Summit County Medical Examiner. The medical examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy either Monday or Tuesday to determine the cause and manner of death.

Holland could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Jones was arrested Aug. 7 in Akron on eight charges, six of which involved the illegal handling of weapons or firearms, after he allegedly fired a .38 revolver into two East Akron homes. His bail was set at $225,000.
