Overview

The shooting occurred on the same day that the Raleigh City Council was scheduled to discuss the issue of police officer worn body cameras, which the Raleigh Police Department does not yet have, but the item was removed from today’s agenda after the shooting where a Raleigh police officer shot and killed Akiel Denkins wanted on felony drug charges during a foot chase Monday. He was shot seven times in the back while running away.

It happened at Bragg Street and S. East Street in southeast Raleigh around noon close to a business called PJ's Grill and Groceries.

Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck Brown told reporters Monday afternoon that a gun was found near the man.

Brown promised a thorough investigation which will "follow the available facts and evidence wherever they may lead."

Brown said the State Bureau of Investigation as well as Internal Affairs are working on the case. The findings will be presented to the Wake County District Attorney.

Monday night, RPD identified senior officer D.C. Twiddy, 29, as the officer involved in the shooting. He has been employed by the Raleigh Police Department since November 2009 and is assigned to the Field Operations Division.

In accordance with departmental policy, Officer Twiddy has been placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation by the State Bureau Investigation.

Legal Action

On Wednesday morning, April 13, 2016, the district attorney who oversaw the investigation of the shooting announced that the officer, D.C. Twiddy would not be charged with a crime.
