Overview

The unarmed Irvington man who was shot and killed by police after he allegedly broke into his estranged wife's home on Monday morning may have told police he had a weapon at the time of the shooting, sources told The Star-Ledger today.

Abdul Kamal, 30, was killed by Irvington Police outside his estranged wife's home on Stanley Street around 2 a.m. Monday, prosecutors have said. Kamal allegedly broke into the home, and then repeatedly threatened responding officers while ignoring orders to remove his hand from his pocket, according to prosecutors.

Kamal was doused with pepper spray, and later shot and killed as he continued to threaten police, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murra.

An Essex County mother whose son was shot and killed by police is calling for a march in Newark.

As WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported, before the police-involved deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, Michele Kamal says there was her son.

“Three Irvington police officers to shoot at him 15 times and 10 bullets actually hit him. No one deserves that,” she said.
