Overview

Police have identified the suspect who was shot and killed by an officer following a police pursuit that ended in a crash Monday night.

St. Louis County police said around 2 a.m. Monday a Mercedes was carjacked in Affton. Then, around 10 p.m., officers saw the stolen vehicle in Jennings and chased it into North City.

The St. Louis County officer then called officers in St. Louis City to help pursue the carjacked vehicle.

A St. Louis City police SUV with two officers inside was on its way to assist when it got into a collision with a car not connected to the investigation near the intersection of Lillian and Union.

Both officers and the two people inside the other vehicle were taken to a hospital. All four suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The St. Louis County officer continued pursuing the suspect vehicle, which crashed on a sidewalk in the 4100 block Lee Avenue near the Fairground Park neighborhood.

According to police, when the vehicle stopped, a 19-year-old passenger exited wearing a mask, gloves and pointing a gun at the officer. The officer then shot the suspect, later identified as Aaron Ballard, who ran a short distance and collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
