Overview

A man wanted by U.S. Marshals was shot and killed in a gunfight late Tuesday as they tried to arrest him on a warrant for violating his conditions of release.

Law enforcement had released few details about the shooting until Wednesday afternoon.

Deputy Marshals working on a task force were looking for 31-year-old Mario Montoya after he broke his conditions of release on federal firearm and mail theft charges by leaving his assigned halfway house on May 20.

A warrant was issued for his arrest.

Tuesday, marshals learned he and a woman, 37-year-old Colleen Calamia, were at a home in the 300 block of Western Skies. They watched Calamia leave in an SUV and pulled her over. When she was questioned, she told marshals Montoya was in the home by himself.

Marshals tried to serve the arrest warrant on him shortly thereafter, they say, at which point he allegedly shot at them. Marshals fired back.

Eventually, another team of marshals entered the home and found Montoya dead from gunshot wounds inside a closet. The Marshals Service says his death is still under investigation.
