Overview

The incident started around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning when a Shelby County officer noticed a suspicious vehicle at an apartment building on the Highway 280 corridor, Major Ken Burchfield said.

Deputies tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspect fled. Officers chased the vehicle, a black SUV, to Oporto Madrid Blvd. off of Interstate 20 in Jefferson County.

Burchfield said that officers from Shelby County and neighboring areas then approached the suspect's car and, "the vehicle made a deliberate movement toward" an officer.

Shelby County deputies then shot the driver of the car. The driver was taken to the hospital where he died.
